The Grumpy Gardeners of Nunthorpe

Norman, Bob, Louise, David and Alan

The Grumpy Gardeners of Nunthorpe are a group of volunteers who quietly do their best to improve the greenspaces and biodiversity of Nunthorpe. Most of their work is done in the two schools – The Avenue Primary School and St Bernadette’s Primary School, where they take responsibility for maintaining the school vegetable gardens, hedges, trees, a dipping pond and other green and natural areas in the school requiring their magic touch. They have also become involved with the Nunthorpe Northumbria in Bloom group, with specific interest in the The Avenue greenspace area and the Railway Station garden.

Although the early Nunthorpe Station area was blessed with a number of trees set amongst the houses, the housing estates of the 1970s and 1980s were almost devoid of any tree tree planting. In earlier days the Grumpy Gardeners and other volunteer groups planted trees and shrubs where they could across these estates. These trees eventually matured and helped provide Nunthorpe with its reputation as a leafy green suburb. The Grumpy Gardeners continue to maintain the quality of these trees and hedges.

At a recent Royal Horticultural Society presentation ceremony the Grumpy Gardeners were awarded a shield for their work in Nunthorpe, scoring an excellent 91 points out of 100.

The group now has five participating members. The main day for their work is every Tuesday, meeting at 10:00 am outside Number 1, The Resolution, Nunthorpe, usually finishing at 1:30 pm. The group would willingly accept any offer of help from enthusiastic volunteers who wish to become involved in improving the green spaces and biodiversity of Nunthorpe.
